Choosing the Right Ingredient for Your Pet Food Formulation

Pet food formulations have different functional requirements depending on format, production method, and label claims. Extruded kibble needs ingredients that maintain expansion and structural integrity through the barrel. Wet and semi-moist formats need binding and texture without masking palatability. In both cases, grain-free and clean-label claims are increasingly important to brand positioning.

Each of our pet food ingredients brings a different functional profile to the formulation. Cassava flour provides structure and expansion in extrusion. Pea starch contributes strong gelling and binding with clean-label status. Potato starch delivers high viscosity and water binding at lower usage rates. The right choice depends on your format, your process, and the label story you need to tell.

Specialty Cassava Flour for Extrusion

This cassava flour grade is purpose-built for extruded pet food production. Because it comes from the whole cassava root, it provides structure and expansion that pure starches cannot match on their own. When combined with one or two complementary flours or starches, it produces excellent grain-free kibble with consistent shape and texture. It also carries a naturally gluten-free profile, so it supports clean formulations without requiring modified ingredients.

Native Pea Starch

Native pea starch is derived from yellow peas and processed by Emsland Group of Germany. Its high amylose content (approximately 35%) gives it strong gelling properties at lower dosage rates than most native starches. Because of that high amylose content, it also maintains excellent stability under the high heat, shear, and pH variation of pet food processing. It functions as a clean-label binder and texturizer, which makes it a practical alternative to chemically modified starches in grain-free pet food formulations.

Native Potato Starch

Native potato starch stands out for its high viscosity and water-binding capacity. Among all major native starches, potato starch reaches the highest peak viscosity. That means you need less of it to achieve the same binding effect. It also produces a nearly clear paste with neutral flavor, so it won't affect the palatability or appearance of your finished product. These properties make it well suited for wet pet food formats, gravies, and semi-moist applications where texture and mouthfeel are critical.

Applications

Pet food manufacturers use our ingredients across a range of product formats. Common applications include:

  • Extruded kibble and dry pet food
  • Grain-free and gluten-free formulations
  • Wet pet food and stews
  • Semi-moist treats and snacks
  • Gravies, sauces, and toppers
  • Dental chews and functional treats

Certifications and Quality

Our pet food ingredients carry the certifications manufacturers require, including Non-GMO Project Verification, Kosher, and Halal. All products are naturally gluten-free and grain-free. We maintain HACCP and SQF protocols across our supply chain, and we provide allergen statements and spec sheets on request.

Ordering and Supply

We sell all pet food ingredients by the pallet. Because we stock product at 12 warehouses across the country, we offer shorter lead times than most suppliers. We also provide samples for bench-top trials so your R&D team can evaluate ingredients before committing to full pallets. Call us at (201) 767-8022 or request a sample online to get started.
